with CO2 which renders them
unconscious in a less stressful way
than normal stunning processes.
Once slaughtered and bled, the hogs
will then go through a new vertical
steam tunnel process, imported from
Europe and the only one in North
America. This rids the carcasses of
any hair in the most sanitary manner.
Other plants use a hot water bath that
can lead to cross -contamination from
one carcass to the next.(
... and in
dairy and beef
housing
There is still interest in
converting from tie stall housing to
free stall housing in Ontario, says
Harold House, OMAFRA
engineeer for dairy and beef
structures and equipment. The
interest is in improved cow
comfort, better ventilation and
lighting, labour savings, and
manure and feed handling, he says.
House and Jack Rodenburg,
OMAFRA Dairy Cattle Production
Systems Program Lead, did three
courses on Free Stall Housing
T)esign across the province this
winter.
There continues to be interest in
robotic milking. There were 300
registered from 21 different
countries for the robotic milking
conference that OMAFRA
sponsored in Toronto from March
20-22.
The use of sand bedding is still
of major interest, as is the use of
fabric -covered -type housing, House
said.
There isn't anything particularly
new in terms of beef housing,
House reports. However if the
proposed Nutrient Management
Act becomes law, he expects to see
an increased interest in total
confinement housing. This would
reduce the amount of open yard
where runoff would have to be
contained or treated. There also
may be more interest in covered
manure storages. This will be true
about dairy operations as well he
says.(
