Dr. George Charbonneau and his wife Anne Coyle received the Promoters of the Year award at the 2002 annual meeting of the Perth County Pork Producers' Association in Stratford, January 24. Charbonneau runs a swine veterinary practice in Stratford and was instrumental in launching the Ontario Pork Industry Council in 1997. He has held all executive positions for the Ontario Association of Swine Practitioners as well as the Ontario Pork Congress. Coyle has served on the registration committee of the Pork Congress and the communications committee of OPIC.0 Former Ag. Minister Lorne Henderson dies at 81 Lorne Henderson, who served as minister of agriculture under the Bill Davis government, died on February 7 at age 81. Henderson first entered politics as a councillor in Lambton County's Enniskillen Township in 1946, running in an effort to get better snow removal on township roads. He was elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1963 and served until his retirement in 1985. He was appointed minister of agriculture in 1979.0 Morris seeks Liberal nomination Former Ontario Federation of Agriculture President Tony Morris is one of several people seeking the Liberal Party nomination in the provincial riding of Bruce -Grey - Owen Sound, currently held by Bill Murdoch. Morris has shown a special interest in developing new income alternatives for farmers, helping found Market Grey -Bruce in the early 1990s and last year spearheading a conference "Taking Back Your Livelihood" at Formosa, which looked at the possibility of processing more food locally through new generation co- operatives. He recently developed a new website www.ruralroutes.com0 Lintons Huron's producers of the year Dave and Brenda Linton are the producers of the year for the Huron County Pork Producers' Association. In presenting the award at the association's annual meeting in Seaforth, Dave Lewington spoke of the respect the couple has won from their neighbours while building their farm from a renovated barn to an efficient 100 -sow -plus farrow -to - finish operation. Speaking of their newest barn, a loose -housing sow barn, Lewington said it showed "respect for the environment and for the welfare of their pigs." Both Lintons are involved in the community with Brenda serving with the Humane Society and Dave having spent two years as Huron County's director on the Ontario Pork board. He has also been involved in consultations on Canadian Food Inspection Agency's proposals to regulate drug use in on- farm feed milling operations. Dave serves on the CKNX Farm Advisory Board and writes columns for Ontario Farmer.
