Could low dollar haunt us in future?
An opinions expressed herein may
not necessarily reflect the views of
the Perth County Pork Producers'
Association.

62 cents. Could it come to haunt us
sometime in the near future'?
' The U.S. Government may view
our low dollar as countervailable
because 52 per cent of our hog
production is exported. Their sow
numbers have dropped from seven
million down to six million and we
have loops and farmers expanding all
the time. What could possibly go
wrong with this picture?
The U.S. isn't really impressed
with this scenario. For example, the
tomato industry expanded largely
under glass, exporting with a low
dollar. At the present time they are
exporting under approximately 40 per
cent tariffs.
The wood industry across Canada
has seen heavy tariffs. They are also
at a slowdown. These are ongoing
issues. What will be next'? Pork'?
A survey was taken in the K -W
region of 200 businesses as to
whether they were Canadian or
foreign owned. Of these, 70 per cern
were foreign owned. Maybe it is time
for a common currency.
I would like to point out that in the
FMD crisis in England last year, it
took the CFIA 90 days to finally
install rubber mats with disinfectant
at Toronto International Airport as a
control measure. This should have
