The Rural Voice, 2002-03, Page 41saying, "Careful, this is an electric
fence!" He made a six-foot detour
around it.
Soon we were in the barn lean-to
surrounded by fragrant new
round bales and watching a pen
of ewes and Iambs contentedly
munching their hay. "So," he said,
"where's their food?" I was
speechless for a few moments. What
could he possibly mean? Wasn't it
obvious that they were eating it? I
hesitated.
"Uh, which food?" 1 asked.
"Why, the food that they eat," he
replied. Apparently he thought I was
mentally deficient. I had to give some
response.
"Well, uh, these are round bales,
and, uh, that's one in the feeder, and
well, they're eating it." He wrote it
down. We moved on.
"And what are they doing in this
pen?"
"Eating."
"And this pen?"
Perhaps we need
something like a Food
for Fools program
"Eating."
"And this pen?"
"Eating."
I would have liked to have shown
him my huge manure pile as evidence
of the success of my farm operation,
but unfortunately that end of things
never occurred to him, and he didn't
ask.
I waved as he drove away, his
white shirt-tail cheerily waving in
return from the door jamb. I had
thought when he arrived that I was
the one in trouble, but now I knew
that it was not I but he. He left with a
sheath of papers, including copies of
my detailed flock records and
projects, and had no idea what to do
with them. Perhaps it's time to
expand upon the "Roots of Bruce"
and "Grown in Grey" programmes
with "something like a "Food for
Fools" programme. It would be
directed at the city executives who
are making critical decisions that
affect the ability of this country to
feed itself. "If You Ate Today, Thank
A Farmer" just doesn't Seem to be
getting the message across.0
