"I'm kind of worried about this
situation in Argentina," said Dave
Winston the other day.
"What do you mean, that all that
grain they've got down there that
they can't sell will suddenly come on
the market and kill world demand?",
asked Cliff Murray.
"No it's the money thing that's
got me worried," said Dave.
"Oh come on, bad as the loonie is.
we're a long way from Argentina's
problems," scoffed George
McKenzie.
"No, it's the banks," said Dave.
"You know how they're in this
situation where they put money in
the banks and they can't get it out,"
said Dave.
"Yeh, must be tough for people
down there but what about it?"
wondered George.
"I'm worried Canadian banks
might think this was a good thing and
try to do it here," said Dave.
"Yeh, they make it hard enough to
get your money out as it is," said
Molly Whiteside as she delivered
George's toast. "I hate the lineups at
that bank machine."
"1 skip them and go inside the
bank and deal with the tellers," said
Cliff.
"Inside? Whoever heard of going
inside?" said Molly.
"Yeh, you might actually have to
deal with real people," said Dave.
"The great thing about a machine is
if it makes a mistake you can curse it
and kick it. With a real person, if you
do that you get arrested."
"But with a person they might
actually listen and do something,"
said George.
"When was the last time you were
in a bank?" asked Cliff.
"Me, I have to go inside a bank
once a year to talk to the manager
about my loan and that's once too
•
often," said Dave.
"Well just be glad she's still
giving you money." said George. "I
figure with all the money Canadian
banks have lost in Argentina
somebody's going to pay and it's
usually Canadian farmers."
"Isn't it interesting that the
bankers are the ones who make bad
loans and then they start cutting back
on us because they say we're not
running our businesses well so we're
bad risks?" said Cliff:
"Yeh, and if we make bad
decisions and lose money, we have
our take-home pay slashed all to
heck but the presidents and vice-
presidents of the banks still get their
big salaries and expect us to take the
hit," said Dave.
"Power is rewarded in this world I
tell you," said George. "I mean take a
look at this Olympic judging thing.
That would never have happened to
the U.S. It's what we get when the
government lets our armed forces run
down the way they have."
"What, you mean if the French
had been afraid we'd invade them
they wouldn't have fiddled the
scores?" asked Cliff, incredulously.
"I'm just saying people respect
power," said George. "I -mean it was
the Americans that got this whole
thing straightened out, not us."
"Probably threatened with a
hydrogen bomb," smirked Dave.
"Go ahead and laugh, but
Canada's a 90 -pound weakling on
the world stage," said George.
"Seems to me we should be better
at the Olympics than we are," said
Dave with a wink at Cliff. "Afterall,
there are all these downhill sports
like bobsled and skiing and
according,to guys like George, here,
Canada's been going downhill for a
long time."
"Yeh but it takes weight to go fast
down the bobsled track and Canada's
strictly a lightweight," George
grouched.
"See the problem is we're so used
to devaluation that instead of getting
gold, we keep getting silver," said
Cliff.
"Well with you guys around
here," hinted Molly, "getting silver
would sure be a nice surprise, let
alone gold or folding money."0
