Helping students toward ag careers
Writing this November article for
The Rural Voice is an honour for me
as I have the opportunity to highlight
the recipients of the Bruce County
Federation of Agriculture Award. I
am very happy to see so many of our
Bruce County young people choose
agriculture as a career. The recipients
of this award have shown
agricultural -related leadership skills
throughout our county and have
chosen to continue their work or
studies in agriculture.
Bruce County Federation of
Agriculture Awards for 2000 have
been awarded to:
• Aaron Legge, Chesley District High
School, son of Doug and Lynda of
Chesley. Aaron is enrolled in the
Associate Diploma of Agriculture
program at the University of Guelph.
• Lorelle Hedley, Kincardine
Secondary School, daughter of Glenn
and Gilberte Hedley of Kincardine.
Lorelle is studying the Associate
Diploma of Agriculture program at
the University of Guelph.
• Heather Dietrich, Walkerton
District Secondary School, daughter
of Ralph and Jayne of Mildmay.
Heather is in the Bachelor of
Business and Commerce Agriculture
degree program at University of
Guelph.
• Chancy Burgess, Sacred Heart High
School, Walkerton, son of Bob and
Maryanne of Mildmay. Chancy is at
the University of Guelph in the
Associate Diploma of Agriculture
program.
Congratulations to the recipients
and to all the Bruce County students
who completed an application for this
award. Also thanks to the guidance
and teaching staff of the schools for
their efforts in choosing the
recipients.
However, in researching this story
I did come across some distressing
news. Some of the high schools did
not give out an award. These high
schools were either unaware of the
award or felt that they had no one
who would qualify. This leads me to
think that there is a grave
misconception of either the award
itself or of the industry.
Let's hope that the
misunderstanding is of the award
itself and not the lack of promotion of
agricultural opportunities within the
schools. Certainly in agriculture
where the growth in apprenticeships,
nutrition, business and commerce.
marketing, research and science is
second to none it is a tempting choice
for our Bruce County students.
The award is to be made available
to a student who has shown
leadership and integrity in agriculture
and is continuing in the field of
agriculture either in the workforce or
education.
Examples of leadership and
integrity would be an active 4 -Her or
Junior Farmer, or someone who is
involved in the family farm. Someone
who continues in the field of
agriculture may be going on to study
an associate diploma in agriculture,
horticulture or aquaculture or a
degree in Bus. Comm Ag. or Ag.
Science or Ag. Marketing or
Genetics. Agricultural studies in
photography and computers are also
possibilities. Equally as important it

could be someone who is choosing to
remain in Bruce County to help
produce our food by returning to the
farm, or working on one. Maybe this
person might be working a local
machinery dealership or welding
shop. The possibilities are endless.
If you are a parent or a student
please make it your business to keep
the guidance department of your
school informed. Fax articles on
agricultural opportunities to the
guidance department to help keep
them abreast of our diverse and
growing industry. Take every
occasion to encourage young people
to consider agriculture by visiting
career classes. Now is a great time to
phone your high school and ask what
universities and colleges are giving
presentations to the senior students.
Be specific and ask about agricultural
presentations, then sit in one one.
You'll be glad you did.0
