Awards honour
rural Ontario
people, projects
Several western Ontario people
and projects were honoured among
the "Best in Country" awards for
rural excellence handed out by the
Foundation for Rural Living.
The Farm Fresh Poultry Co-
operative of Harriston was awarded
the runner-up award in the Excell-
ence in Co-operative Models
category. Winning the category was
the Community Co-operatives proj-
ect from Bracebridge which
developed a model for economic
development in small rural comm-
unities that have Lost political repres-
entation through amalgamation.
Alison Lobb from Clinton in
Huron County received the award for
Contribution to Economic Growth
for the 10 Steps to Community
Action Alumni project which has
helped develop the leadership skills
of 130 people.
Ann Gordon, Cathy Bartolic and
Brenda Trask of the Advanced
Agricultural Leadership Program
Dream Auction received the Outstand-
ing Philanthropic Action award.0
Pork seminar coming
to Shakespeare
A continuing education seminar
for pork producers will be held in the
Shakespeare Community Centre on
Wednesday, November 29, 2000
between 9:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The seminar, sponsored by the
Ontario Pork Producers Marketing
Board, the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
and the Ontario Agricultural Training
Institute is entitled "Recent
Developments in Pork Production
from Birth to Market."
A total of 12 presentations will
cover a variety of topics including:
comparing production practices on
300 and 5000 sow farms, practical
on-farm euthanasia of casualty pigs,
making sense of well water test
results, avoidingphysical residues in
pork and the use of irradiation to
provide the ultimate in food safety.0
