24 THE RURAL VOICE
"There are a few (trail bosses)
uncomfortable with making the visit,
but some trail bosses just love it. I'm
one of those who likes to make the
personal contact as a show of
appreciation," said Filsinger.
Though last year was the first
time the Club handed out
gloves as a gesture of thanks,
they have tried other ways in the past,
including a dinner and social evening.
However, Filsinger said, as people
got busier and busier, fewer
landowners made it each year. The
gloves, therefore, seemed a good way
to make sure all were acknowledged.
Letting the landowners know that
co-operation is important is
something most clubs want to do.
The Listowel Ridge Runners have
presented a gift to their landowners
each spring, while the B -W
Trailerblazers from the Brussels,
Walton, Winthrop, Brodhagen area
have held a well -attended barbecue
each summer.
And the gesture is noticed. While
A Listowel club gives
gifts to landowners
allowing trails on their
properties
Graeme Craig, a non-snowmobiling
landowner in McKillop Twp., said he
doesn't expect any special
recognition, he does appreciate the
efforts of the club members in going
out of their way to say thanks. Craig
who tries to attend the B -W barbecue
every year said that it's nice they
want to credit the landowners for
allowing the use of their property.
As a farmer, Filsinger looks at it
from the other side. "I certainly
appreciate hearing from the club
that's crossing my property," he said
adding, that of the two clubs using his
land, one he has not heard from since
signing the agreement in 1997. "I
would feel honoured to be recognized
in some way, not just used."
Noting that hunters ask each year
to come on the property and do not
assume that they can just because
they did before, he adds, "It's only
respect."
That the landowners deserve such
respect is a reality in light of what it
would mean to the snowmobilers
