County Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER The RCol Voce isprovided to Bruce
County Farmers by the BCFA.
Walkerton the story with no ending
With the start of the Walkerton
inquiry and the recent release of the
Bruce Grey Health Unit Report,
guess which town and rural industry
is leading the newscasts again. It
appears the inquiry will be a very
thorough and detailed examination of
all aspects of what happens to the
water that flowed out of the taps in
Walkerton prior to the May 24
weekend.
Everyone is expecting a long
process with predictions of six
months for results.
We won't have to wait that long
for rules, regulations and legislation
regarding the use, supply and
protection of water. Requiring
minimum testing for those who make
water available to the public will be
mandatory. Possibly dairy farms will
have to provide records of test results
of wash water. Legislation to control
or regulate new construction of
livestock barns has been promised for
fall.
Walkerton has proven the
necessity of having all mechanical
components of a water supply system
working and proper installation and
location of wells.
For those of us whose wells need
upgrading the Environmental Farm
Plan (EFP) offers a financial
incentive for work done to improve a
farm's potential risk to water quality.
John Wilton EFP co-ordinator has
initiated the concept of Kitchen Table
Meetings for the workbooks to be
completed in one day and not linger
on shelves waiting for you to have
the time to get at it. All he needs is
someone to host a few of their
neighbours in order to set up the
program. John can be contacted at
367-2408. Get involved with this
worthwhile project or you may be
forced to participate in a more
onerous review of your farming
practices.
By the time this article is
published I will be the Past President
of BCFA. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank those who have
helped out with federation activities,
The Board Directors and executive
who have contributed a valuable
resource — their time. Expressing
what we have considered the
positions of the majority of our
Land Stewardship demonstration areas catalogue
The Land Stewardship
Demonstration Areas Catalogue is an
innovative project to document
practices that improve resource land
management including forests, soils,
wildlife, and water resources. The
catalogue will compile information
on projects that have been established
recently, or over the years; projects
that have been known locally, or have
been previously difficult to locate. In
addition to being a valuable historical
record, the catalogue will be a
welcome guide for landowners,
resource managers, and those with an
interest in stewardship, including a
wide range of interest groups, schools
and specialty tours.
The project presently covers only
Southwestern Ontario but will be
expanding to include Grey and Bruce
Counties.
