contaminated with essentially the
same types of toxins, reported that
farmers handling contaminated grains
were at greater risk of non-
respiratory health impacts in males
and late -term miscarriages in
females. Extensive exposure
information is currently being
collected in Norway to help further
fine-tune the implications of on-farm
exposure. The results are anticipated
later this year.
Based on a limited amount of
data, the risk of non -respiratory (i.e.
toxin associated) diseases from
handling Fusarium -contaminated
grain appears to be low, but could
occur over a long period of time,
perhaps years, at the current level of
dust exposure. As a result, producers
are advised to take safety precautions
when handling infected grain and
straw. Wear a dust mask
recommended by the CSA (Canadian
Standards Association) as well as
gloves, goggles and coveralls. Follow
good personal hygiene practices such
as washing hands, removing clothing
prior to eating, and showering at the
end of the day.
