River Federation members by the RRFA.
September 19, 2000
Does anyone remember the old
fashioned pig roasts and potluck get-
togethers at John and Janet Owens'
farm north of Emo? It was an annual
event that brought everyone together
after the harvesting was done for the
year. It seems like a whole lifetime
ago.
Anyway, another event similar to
this took place last weekend at Mud
Lake City. Friends and relatives of
Wayne and Betty Salchert gathered to
tour the historical little village that
they have built into the neatest bit of
history that brings back memories of
the "good ole days". It's a plate that
has to be seen to be appreciated.
Betty Salchert, RRFA Member
Services Representative, and Angela
Halvorsen from Rainy River Future
Development Corp. are co-ordinating
a "Get out of Town" District Farm
Tour. The date has been set for
Sunday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m. and
the cost is only $2 for a ticket which
will be exchanged for a passport that
is to be stamped at each stop. A bus
has been donated by T. J. Kaemingh
& Sons Ltd which will provide
transportation for anyone without
wheels. The tour ends at Mud Lake
City with a barbecue and attendance
prizes generously donated by
business places in the district. Ken
Fisher has offered to drive the bus
and assures that it will be a great way
to spend a day with family and
friends.
The September RRFA meeting
was held at Emo with Bernie
Zimmerman, Dianne VandenBrand,
Kristine Carpenter, Shirley Morrish,
KimJo Bliss -Calder, Ken Fisher,
Jason Teeple, Betty Salchert, Kim
Desserre and Angela Halvorsen
attending.
Kim reported that of the 56 booths
available at the Farm Progress
Building this year, 38 were exhibits
with some using double and even
triple booth space. It is hoped that in
future years that agriculture will
continue to be a priority in the
promotional part of the exhibits. Each
space is 12 feet across and eight feet
deep with a charge of $90 per booth.
There's an extra fee for hydro. Call
Linda Armstrong if you want to book
a preferred space for next year.
Ag Awareness received
honourable mention for their booth
display promoting milk. The
mannequin milkmaid turned many a
head. Ag Awareness will also be
promoting milk products during the
District Farm Tour from the Research
Station and again all the Farmers'
Markets on Saturday, October 7 to
round off Agricultural Awareness
Week.
The entertainment committee,
making their report on the annual
upcoming RRFA dinner and live
entertainment, stated that all is in
place for Saturday, October 14 at
Barwick Hall. Guest speaker is Geri
Kamenz and tickets are available
from any one of your directors.

Farm Safety Report by Shirley
There is a solvent used to clean tools known as Toluene or "tolly" that after
prolonged use can cause brain and nervous system damage. It also targets the
liver, kidneys and skin by absorbing into the bloodstream through the pores of
the skin. Be safe and use a hand cleaner instead, or even baby oil which removes
paint, oil or grease. Skin -So -Soft does the same thing and smells o.k.
Two small children from the Elkhorn area in Manitoba were hospitalized after
becoming sick with a strain of E.coli bacteria, similar to the one that struck in
Walkerton, Ontario. Tests are underway. It's also known as the "hamburger
disease" and transmitted through food, like raw milk or undercooked meat. It can
also be passed on through ground water, soils, livestock manure or from person
to person. People are urged to teach children to wash well with soapy water and
lather for at least 20 seconds after contact with livestock or pets. Also testing of
well water for Coliform at least once a year is encouraged.0
set up to find four new directors and

Jason reported that all is going
very well at the Rainy River
Community Pasture.
Monday, September 25 is the next
4-H Leaders' Association meeting. It
will take place at the Barwick Hall.
Angela reported that rooms have
already been booked in the city of
Regina for the upcoming bus trip to
Agribition at the end of November.
To date there are 25 names on the
list. If anyone is interested in
travelling call Angela at 807-274-

find you in all the details.
The Royal Winter Fair takes place
at the Keystone Centre in Brandon
during the week of March 26 - 31,

The Rainy River District
Cattlemen's Association will hold
their Final Fall Sale at Strattdn
Salesyard on Saturday, October 14 at
9:00 a.m. The Top of the Line Sale

sharp. Check out the August issue of
Cattlemen's magazine for an article
on the new scales and renovations
that have taken place at the yards.
District cattlemen should be mighty
proud of all their accomplishments
this past year.
A little reminder to all readers
who receive this magazine that you
are now reading. The Rural Voice
charges a yearly subscription of
$16.05 but have been giving the
RRFA an arrangement of $2.25 a
subscription per year because the
RRFA pays for all members to
receive a copy each month. We have
approximately 160 members. The
Rural Voice is losing money on
subscriptions from our district and we
therefore may lose our magazine
subscriptions in the future.
