foolproof, however, says Shropshall.
The whistling noise carries forward
ahead of you so if a deer is on the
road it will look up, see your lights,
and get out of the way. Whistles
don't do anything to stop the deer
that bounds out of a bush and directly
into your path.
That said, the Huron detachment,
which had experienced several
collisions with deer, hasn't had a
single collision since cruisers were
equipped with the whistles. Well,
there was one — one officer,
convinced the whistles didn't do any
good, removed them from his car. He
hit a deer that night.
There have, thankfully, been no
human fatalities from the
collisions but there have been
some close calls. Shropshall tells of
one woman who was hit by a deer
that had already been hit by another
driver. The deer flew in through her
windshield and went out the back

deer parts along the way.
The financial cost is more easily
measured. Transport Canada
estimates it costs society, on average,
$3100 for every property damage
collision, and that includes minor
accidents. Collisions with deer can
cause serious damage. Still, even at
that figure, it means collisions with
deer will cost insurance companies
and car owners $620,000 in Huron
County alone.
And of course nobody's counting
the deer's side of the story.
Given the erratic nature of some
deer, preventing all accidents is
going to be impossible, but, says
Malhiot, the object of the program is
to remind drivers to be aware and be
thinking of the possibility of deer
crossing.0
