Sound produce more than three
million bushels of apples. This
represents about 25 per cent of the
province's apples, making the region
the largest apple growing area by
volume, said Wilson.
"We're in bad shape." said Rob
Gardner an apple grower from
Meaford 35 kilometres west of
Collingwood.
Many growers will have less
than 10 per cent of their
usual harvest, while others
will have a full crop, said Gardner.
It doesn't help that there is an
over -supply of apples world wide,
said Brian Gilroy, another Meaford-
area farmer and the vice -chair of the
Ontario Apple Marketing
Commission.
This means that rules of supply
and demand won't apply and Ontario
growers won't get higher prices,
however small the harvest this year.
"On top of that, there's a lot of
apple juice concentrate from China
looking for a home," said Gilroy.

business in China with much of the
product turned into concentrated
apple juice which is shipped to North
America.
While some American states have
levied a 52 per cent import tax on
apple juice imported from China, no
such levy exists in Ontario, said
Gilroy.
"So it's hard for our growers to
compete," he said. Canadian apple

consumers don't realize they are

Georgian Bay region. Wilson doesn't
anticipate higher apple prices in
grocery stores.
"There may be a tiny increase in
price, but apples are bought and sold
on a world market now," he said.0
