38 THE RURAL VOICE
Another area where the show has
carved a niche for itself has been in
the Woodlot Expo which this year
offers several new features and
focuses on equipment and services
for the private woodlot owner.
aul Robertson, co-ordinator of
Woodlot Expo, says demos and
displays will emphasize the
financial and environmental benefits
of a well-managed woodlot.
"Woodlot Expo features equipment
that is both affordable and useful to
the farmer with a woodlot."
A partnership with the Ontario
Stewardship Program, and the 45
local stewardship councils across the
province, will result in a series of
new demonstrations to promote
sustainable forestry.
"Year -in, year -out, the farm
woodlot can provide a very good
rotational income," Robertson says.
Farmers need to be aware of the
value of the woodlot for timber,
firewood. and also the specialty
woods in demand by craftspeople.
The Southwestern Ontario Loggers
Association will explain the
professional services its members
provide to woodlot owners.
Woodlot Expo will feature a Red
Pine Forest that quickly locates the
exhibit and provides a spot for a little
rest and relaxation. Through the
magic of transplants this "instant"
woodlot of mature trees will provide
an ideal place to meet friends and
spend a few minutes under the
canopy of the red pines.
A people -mover tour of the
University of Guelph's farm woodlot
(on the Outdoor Farm Show site) will
highlight management practices of a
saw log and firewood operation.
Back at the Woodlot Expo tent,
carvers will be displaying their skills
— and keep an eye out for the young
woodsmen cutting, chopping and
sawing their way to victory in the
woodsman's competition.
Women might be called the rock
on which the family farm has been
built over the years and that role will
be set in stone with a new monument
that will be built at the show over the
three-day period.
Farm women from across Ontario
are encouraged to bring a stone from
their home farms when they come to
the show. Each contribution of
granite, sandstone, apatite, etc will
become part of a cairn that will
