36 THE RURAL VOICE
in making the switch to organic
farming.
Prof. Duane Falk, plant
agriculture department, University of
Guelph, will be available each day to
discuss organic crop production from
a plant breeder's point of view. The
Canadian Organic Seed Alliance will
provide details on the production and
marketing of certified organic seed.
Organic Expo is a one stop shop
for information and technology.
There will be displays on composting
equipment', and supplements of
minerals and vitamins for organic
livestock and poultry production.
participating organic food
processors, such as Mapleton
Organic Dairy and OntarBio
Organic Meadow Products will have
daily samplings of their retail
products.
The organic food section is the
fastest growing segment of the retail
food business. "Consumer demand
for a number of organic foods is
growing at a pace that we can't keep
up," says Larry Lenhardt, organic
grower and co-ordinator of the
Organic Expo exhibit.
For those looking at alternative
crops, hemp has held great interest in
recent years and the Farm Show has
been on top of the trend since the
beginning with a hemp exhibit and
growing plot. The hemp has always
been a big attraction, whether for the
curious just having a look, or for the
serious farmer considering an
alternative crop.
Hemp Expo promises to increase
the traffic this year with more to see,
more to eat and more to wear. From a
hemp fashion show, to beer tent with
two hemp brews on tap, to a hemp
food court with products such as
hemp butter on corn and hemp
tortilla chips, 15 exhibitors promise
an eye-opening display of the many
uses of this crop.
The exhibit is expanding to
coincide with the inaugural general
meeting of the Ontario Hemp
Alliance, a newly -formed association
that includes growers, processors,
manufacturers and retailers.
In addition, the annual meeting of
the California-based Hemp Industries
Association, which is also being held
in conjunction with the show,
promises a gathering of hemp
specialists from across Canada and
the United States.
