The Rural Voice, 2000-09, Page 39Since the Farm Show is located on
the University of Guelph's Research
Farm, it's only to be expected the
university would use the show to
show off some of its achievements in
research.
The University of Guelph exhibit
will anchor the Biotech Expo and.
says Dr. Dave Hume, Executive
Director, University of Guelph -
OMAFRA Research Program,will
attempt to de -mystify the myths of
biotechnology.
In a down-to-earth approach, there
will be side-by-side trials comparing
traditional varieties of corn, soybeans
and potatoes with Bt corn, Round Up
Ready soybeans and Bt potatoes.
From eaith to beyond, the
University's exhibit will feature
a computer game that
challenges contestants to choose the
experts needed to grow a crop on
Mars. "Bio -Mars" promises to test
the agronomic skills of the best
farmers, while at the same time
encouraging young farmers of all
ages to understand the benefits of
biotechnology.
With so much talk about genetic
engineering, the university's exhibit
will provide students to guide you
through a DNA extraction process.
A delegation of graduate students
will be on hand every day to answer
questions and discuss career
opportunities in the many fields of
biotechnology. Hume says the field is
virtually exploding. "Every year
more than 9,000 graduates in Canada
are entering employment in the
various areas of biotechnology."
While high-tech areas like genetic
engineering are expected at shows
like the Farm Show, usually the
organic farming sector is ignored.
Not this year. Both organic farmers
and those curious about organic
farming will have a chance to learn
more through an exhibit co-ordinated
by the Organic Crop Producers and
Processors Ontario Inc.(OCCP) and
linking several of the major organic
food processors to display and
promote organic products now found,
or soon to be introduced, on the retail
grocery shelves.
OCCP certifies organic production
from coast to coast. Growers who
have gone through an organic
certification process will be on hand
daily to explain the details of the
program for those who are interested
