The Rural Voice, 2000-09, Page 35exist. "The visitors didn't have to
come to town, they had everything
they wanted out there," Simpson said.
Nutt also said things may change for
Elora as it is a bigger town than
Dashwood and traffic may go
through the town.
But Nutt warns business owners,
"don't think people are going to stay
and shop". Even Craig said he was
not surprised to hear that sales did not
go way up during the match. "People
are in a hurry to get to the site and
may not stop on their way in order to
get there faster," Craig said.
Aspot for a business within the
match can mean big money.
"Where else can you get
100,000 people coming through your
store or business. It's very cost
effective," Craig said. Craig said
having a match in the county is great
exposure for tourism, as visitors
become more aware of the area and
what it has to offer and may return in
the future. "It makes people realize
this is a place to come and visit and
spend some time," Craig said.
But it isn't all about the money.
Craig stated that the pride factor to
hosting a match is a big benefit.
Chairman Robinson said having the
plowing match in the Elora has
boosted community spirit. Chris
Machan lives close to the match site
and said it will give the respect that is
due to farmers. "It will help
recognize farmers and agriculture that
contributes so much to this
community," he said. Machan, and
his friend Greg Beck agreed that the
match will give people who have
never been to Elora before a chance
to experience it. "It will show off the
beautiful village," Beck said.
As chairman Robinson said, much
of the success of the match relies on
something completely out of any
organizers, hands; the success relies
much on good weather. "We would
dearly love to have good weather,"
Robinson said. Last year's match was
titled "The Sunshine Match" as the
Dashwood match had near perfect
weather. Accommodations chair
Darrington couldn't agree more that
business at the plowing match is
affected by weather. "It's big
business as long as the weather co-
operates," she said.0
