The Rural Voice, 2000-09, Page 31Queen of the Furrow, Wellington
resident Katie Dickieson.
As Queen of the Furrow the young
woman receives a small scholarship,
the use of a car for one year and
represents the Ontario Plowmen's
Association for the year.
"The Queen of the Furrow means
for a year-long term you represent the
Ontario Plowmen's Association and
travel to different local plowing
matches and promote the upcoming
Ontario Plowing Match," said Queen
of the Furrow co-chair Amy
Dickieson, whose sister is Katie.
To become the Queen of the
Furrow competitors must fight
it out with 32 girls and are
required not only to make a speech
on stage, be interviewed by judges.
but must participate in a plowing
competition.
On the Thursday night a banquet
for the young women will be held
where five finalists will be
announced. That evening the five
finalists must make an impromptu
speech and at the end of the evening
the winner is announced.
Amy Dickieson met all the
competitors in February, and said
picking a Queen will be difficult.
"I have 'no doubt the competition
will be very stiff, they're all great
girls," she said.
Traffic flow and parking are
expected to be less boggy this year at
the match Robinson said. The wagons
will be kept off the roads and the
parking is very close to the site.
The Sunday church service will be
quite upbeat with many familiar
hymns said Robinson.
The church service will be held at
a new Guelph arena on September 17
at 7:00 p.m., the first event ever to be
held in the arena.
"It's going to be an inaugural
event," Robinson said.
The church service will feature an
expected 300 -member mass choir
from around the area to lead the
hymn sings.
The goal Robinson has for the
match is to showcase Wellington
County and for visitors to feel the
friendliness of the county.
In the end the committee heads
aspire to attract many visitors and as
Robinson stated, "To showcase
Wellington the best we can."0
