Humane Society needs your help
The Grey Bruce Humane Society
(GBHS) is incorporated under the
laws of Ontario and is an affiliate of
the Ontario Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(OSPCA) and therefore is the legal
Humane Society for the Counties of
Grey and Bruce.
The Society operates with a board
of 11 directors who are elected at the
annual general meeting of members
who strive to seek a high profile in
both counties as a professional,
caring network of volunteers with
"ANIMAL WELFARE" their
priority.
At present we have five volunteer
agents who work under the Animal
Protection Service of the Ontario
Humane Society. These agents
handle a Targe variety of complaints
each year and whenever possible the
agents try to co-operate with the
people to improve the conditions of
the animals such as gats, dogs,
rabbits, cattle, etc. There are very few
complaints regarding farm animals
but unfortunately when they do it is
usually a very serious problem.
The GBHS appreciates thesupport
and help we get from the farming

62 THE RURAL VOICE
community and look forward to
working with you -for animal welfare
in Grey Bruce.
The GBHS is well aware of the
serious consequences of Bill C17 to
all animal husbandry groups, and also
the impact of Bill C33 the "Species at
Risk" and the impact this may have
on Humane Societies as well as to
farmers and landowners.
The GBHS has been extremely
fortunate in having five acres of land
donated for the building of the
shelter. At present we are waiting for
Sydenham Council to approve the
rezoning from agriculture to
institutional and we hope this will be
settled this month. It has been a long
10 -year battle to get this far.
Now we must get busy in a big
way to raise funds to pay for the
building and to have a fund Targe
enough to finance the daily operation
of a shelter, as all the funds will come
from donations, legacies,
memberships and various fund
raising events.
We will be holding our Annual Pet
Walk-A-Thon on August 27 starting
at 12:30 p.m. at the Harrison Park
Bandshell, Owen Sound. If you
would like to participate please call
372-0858 and leave a message or call
364-1065.
If you would like to have a .yard
sale, card party, etc. and donate the
proceeds to the shelter fund it would
be very much appreciated. It is
essential that we raise a large sum of
money as the shelter has to be
equipped with everything needed to
run the office as well as for the
animals.
