of his role is to provide some of that
confidence in the Ontario industry for
producers.
Schlegel was encouraged by his
father Earl to began farming on his
own — buy his own farm and make his
own mistakes.
"It was a unique gift he gave me,"
said Schlegel of that advice. He adrnits
to having made many mistakes over his
farming career but when they are the
type that cost $10,000 or more, you
don't forget them or make the same
mistake again.
He described his father as an
entrepreneur and risk taker who was
the first in the area to put up a broiler
barn and later in life built a seniors'
retirement home in Tavistock. He
passed away last March.
Schlegel was married in 1979 to
wife Catherine. He had previously
attended the University of Guelph,
majoring in animal science in the tour -
year agriculture program. But a
summer job working at Schneider's
meat packing plant in Kitchener turned
into a full-time job that superseded his
university goals. Then his first-born
son Adam, now 19, came along and
suddenly he had a family and was
farming with school aspirations left
behind. Eventually the couple would
have two more sons, Toby, now 17 and
Ben, now 13.
Schlegel were picked his
educational dreams again three years
ago with his enrollment in a Master of
Business Administration in agriculture
program through Guelph and
Athabasca universities. But that too
was put on hold with his increased
responsibilities with Ontario Pork.
On his first farm, five miles west of
the home farm he now lives on,
Schlegel did all the work in converting
an old bank barn into a facility for 105
sows, right down to making the
farrowing crates. Over the years he has
farmed with neighbours and currently
is involved with a pork production loop
that involves Richard Yantzi and John
Lichti, who was a past chair of Ontario
Pork.
He named Lichti and St. Marys area
farmer Bob Stevens as two people who
assisted or mentored him in his early
involvement with pig politics. Stevens
he admired for the energy he was able
to put into Ontario Pork.
Schlegel also operates four broiler
barns, turning out 400,000 birds
annually, but describes himself as "a
pig man first." He employs two people
full time and some part-time staff as
well.
