2 THE RURAL VOICE
Gisele Ireland
The secrets of a successful marriage
May was the month of surprises.
That gully washer we had brought us
up a little shaken and drenched. Our
four children threw a surprise party
for Super Wrench and I, and
surprised we
were! The
accompanying
surprise came
from the party
guests who
were surprised
we had been
together that
long and
surprised at
how we had
managed it.
This question
was posed
mainly to Super
Wrench who in
their eyes obviously suffered the
most during this wedded alliance.
The more I thought about the
"secrets" of wedded bliss, the more
confused I became. There is no
secret. If you chose farming as a
profession, you've already got the
basic blueprint.
When you buy a farm, you
proceed to adjust things around you
to suit your tastes and you eventually
settle in like a broody hen on her
nest. You don't peruse the real estate
ads weekly looking for a "better"
place with maybe a pond, less stones
and more trees. Ditto for marriage.
There will be years with crop
failures. You then invent ingenious
ways to pay the mortgage, buy shoes
for the kids and pay for braces for the
kid with the overbite. You don't pack
up, leave a note for the mortgage
holder and look for a farm that hasn't
had a crop failure. There's bound to
be one sooner or later and the hunting
for greener pastures never ends.
Work on your own fields, pray
consistently, fertilize continually and
the good crops are sure to follow. The
couples who heed this pick daisies
together in their golden years.
Animals and crops get sick. A
good farmer doesn't wait until the
ravaging is complete before seeking
help. Farmers have a good expression
for this: "Don't bother closing the
gate after the cows are gone". Unless
your crops are dying from megatron
rays from a passing alien vessel,
someone else has experienced what
you are going through. Those who
seek the counsel of others when
needed, end up cuddling under the
same blanket.
Marriage, like farming, is an
investment. If all your resources are
spent curling, going to meetings and
working for the good of all in service
clubs, who is doing the chores? If you
expect to run a thriving and vital
farming operation, you've got to be
there. Spending time together insures
your partner will stick around to help
you clean your dentures.
Once the business of farming
becomes nothing but a worn rut from
the house to the barn, with no detours
along the way, it isn't fun anymore.
Change things, rotate things, paint
things, build things, plant things and
you will again find something
awesome in every sunrise and sunset.
Couples who go out with friends,
have picnics and are active in church
and community, drink from the
fountain of togetherness.
When downers occur, the first
reaction of a good farmer is not to get
rid of the bull and replace him with a
bigger and better one. Super Wrench
has proven himself in the field trials
... and I wouldn't have a clue where
to look for another one like him.0
