Looking for work on-line
By Janice Becker
College and university studies have
been completed for the year, young
people are returning to their home
communities for the summer and the
job hunt should be well underway.
If you are not one of the fortunate
who have already tracked down a job
or will be returning
to last year's posi-
tion, there are job
search websites
geared to rural
youth.
A partnership
program developed
by Ontario 4-H
Council, Bestard
Agricultural
Placements, Canadian AgriCareers
and the Rural Job Secretariat Fund of
OMAFRA, Rural Youth Employment
Network, at www.ruraljobs.com, is
just one site which can lead to sum-
mer employment opportunities.
Though many of the jobs listed in
late April were from the Orangeville
area, there was a search engine which
allow users to check out possibilities
across the province when they
become available. The search engine
also offered the opportunity to seek
employment in specific fields or look
through all the postings.
Though billed as a rural jobs site,
those listed were far from the expect-
ed farm labourer type, though those
were also covered. Some of the posi-
tions included cooks, cashiers, ship-
ping and receiving, camp counselor,
groundsworker, secretary, marketing,
lifeguards and even a clown.
The jobs are not just "rural" jobs,
but jobs for rural youth.
The site enabled employers to post
opportunities. There are hundreds of
employers named with locations and
contact information.
Aside from the work available, the
network provides very valuable infor-
mation on strategies to get and keep
that job you want. There is extensive
information on resume writing, cover
letters, interview skills and a resume
worksheet to get you started.
With a free registration, an interac-
tive resume builder and intelligent
search agent are at your disposal.
Once a personal profile has been
Web sites

jobs
developed, users have the choice of
posting their resume so potential
employers can seek them out or sim-
ply use the job matching option when
they log -in.
The helpful tips could be used by
anyone searching for the perfect job,
but registration is limited to those
from 10 to 29.
As with most good sites, the net-
work provides the opportunity for
discussions with other users, post
messages for response, leave feed-
back comments for others or benefit
from the resources listed, such as
other job search sites.
One link takes visitors to
www.agriCAREERS.com, a itemiza-
tion of international classifieds for
the more experienced worker.
Searchers can obtain information on
employment from around the world
with salary ranges into the six -figure
range. All of these are related to agri-
culture in some aspect, but tend more
to directors of operations or research
personnel.
For those looking for any type of
employment, the listings can be
found through the human resources
department of the government.
One site which can search across
the country is found at www.on.hrdc-
drhc.gc.ca. Visitors can ask for a
quick search of employment by job
title such as computer or farm labour,
look at all the jobs listed for a partic-
ular area or limit the inquiry to jobs
posted within a specific time frame.
In Southwestern Ontario,
goderich.london.hrdc-dncc.gc.ca pro-
vides a quick scan of jobs from north-
ern Huron County, through
Woodstock, London, Sarnia and St.
Thomas.
I am very interested in speaking
with someone who makes use of
OMAFRA's nutrient management
computer software, preferably in the
Goderich-Stratford-Listowel-Grand
Bend area. Anyone interested in fill-
ing me in on how the system works
for a future column can contact me
via e-mail at becker@wcl.on.ca.
