herbicides need about 1/2" (12mm)
of rain for activation, and .this needs
to arrive before weed seedlings
emerge. As well. Devrinol herbicide
needs to be incorporated by rainfall
or irrigation before sunlight degrades
it (two days for summer applications).
Weeds, on the other hand, waited
for the rains to germinate. In many
areas, rains started after fruit set, and
weed escapes were soon evident.
Some growers used post -emergent
herbicides like Gramoxone, Ignite or
Roundup with good results, but
branches were soon low to the
ground with their crop. Continued
rains in August encouraged more
weeds to germinate. This resulted in
weed problems at harvest.
Should you adjust your weed
management strategy? Possibly. In
higher density orchards where
sunlight easily reaches the ground, it
appears that two or three herbicide
applications will be necessary. Soil -
applied herbicides usually work for
eight to 12 weeks if moisture
activates them. So a combination of
early season burn -off, waiting for
first weed emergence to apply soil -
applied herbicides, and a mid-season
cleanup spray may be necessary.
Where perennial weeds are
increasing, plan for some time to spot
spray in early July or post-harvest.
Prevention of new perennial weed
patches by mowing around fields
before seeds set is also useful.
Some growers are investigating
the use of sickle bar mowers for late
season mowing after the branches are
weighted down. Combining this
operation with other trips through the
orchard should be possible with some
alterations of available forage
equipment.0
