Canada regulations state that
"novel" foods containing non -natural
genetic variation created by artificial
mutagenesis or "tissue culture" aided
crosses between unrelated plant
species must all undergo the same
thorough testing for health and
environmental effects as those
involving single gene transfers
between species. They're all non -
natural genetic modifications in
Canadian regulators' eyes. That's a
good thing, since a late -1999 survey
of Ontario public attitudes to
genetically engineered foods done for
Ontario Agri -Food Technologies
showed that 69 per cent were very
concerned or quite concerned about
GM created by mutagenesis —
compared to 48 per cent for gene
transfers between species.
Any food labelling strategy in
Canada must involve all forms of
GM, and include foods containing
ingredients made from GM crops,
even if non-detectable. If made
mandatory, this would cost money.
Lots of it.
Maybe one of the reasons why
food labelling may be done so
cheaply in the UK — though who
knows the real cost which is buried in
UK foods prices about 38 per cent
higher than in Canada (source,
Toronto Star survey) — is that the
policy is more of a hoax than a
serious effort to inform, or to be
honest with consumers. It's also a
very effective non -tariff barrier for
imports of unprocessed Canadian
grains.0
