Ernst Bayer wants to give a gift to rural people
looking for a new source of income. He's been
teaching people how to breed bees. Ontario has
a bee shortage and annually imports $3.5 million
worth of bees.
While there are
many people who
keep bees for
honey production,
very few breed
bees and there's
money to be
made, Bayer
insists. He also
advocates the
birth of a honey
wine industry in
Ontario.

RURAL VOICE
In a time when municipalities are being wiped off the map
through municipal amalgamation, how do small communities
stay alive and lively? Some have been working together in
unique ways to make things happen. We begin a series of
articles this month with a look at Belmore and its Maple Syrup
Festival.
