Planting trees for
the millennium
Now is a good time to think about
planting trees as a millennium
project. The Canadian Foundations
of Canada has launched a Canada -
wide program called Our Millennium
with the sole
purpose of
encouraging
groups of
people to do
something -
anything -
this year that
will improve
their
comunities.
According to
a brochure
distributed
by
Foundations,
..itisa
nationwide program encouraging
Canadians to come together in our
communities to contribute special
gifts to the future. These gifts — of
time, energy, commitment and
support — will signify our hopes,
values and priorities for the future
well-being of our communities."
"Plant trees, build trails, help kids,
preserve heritage, protect the
environment, promote the arts or
create endowment funds. Just do
something you care about", they say.
Our Millennium is the brainchild
of Peter Aykroyd, who was the prime
mover behind Canada's centennial
celebrations and is the father of actor
Dan Aykroyd. Peter presented his
idea to Community Foundations of
Canada, which has 81 member
foundations across Canada, and
which then took on leadership of Our
Millennium.
"The idea behind Our Millenn-
ium", says Aykroyd, "is simple, but
powerful. Invite Canadians to get
together with a group of people —
friends, neighbours, co-workers —
and do something special for their
comm -unity in honour of the
millennium ... Deep down we all
want to say, `I was there for the
millennium and I mattered—
