Advice
countries purchasing wheat. the 2000
winter wheat crop in average
condition, could lead to multiyear
lows. Currently CBOT March tutures
are at $2.40 U.S. per bushel, and July
CBOT futures are at $2.61 per
bushel. The trade feels at this time
that by the time we get to June or
July futures could be at the $2.40 per
bushel level. The values of wheat
from July 1999 to July 2000 never
offered the opportunity to lock in
prices that would give the cost of
production back to the producer.
In summary the current crisis in
wheat values could get worse! The
board has somewhat buffered the
1999 returns as the volume of sales
of 1999 crop are above the normal
level with a high percentage of sales
made during August and September.
Unfortunately, the revenue from
those sales will not meet the cost of
production, so applications are being
made for early market revenue
support payments.
The crisis in commodity pricing
did not arrive in a month or two and
will not be over in a month or two. I
hope that those that are in the
position to support the farming
community, do!O
Open shed housing
can be good
for horses
By Dr. Bob Wright
OMAFRA, Fergus
Open shed housing gives horses
access to the outdoors year round and
is ideal for most horses.
Young horses that are kept with
older horses will develop a better
temperament since the other horses
will teach them their place. They
will learn to be horses and not pets.
They will be better mannered as well
as healthier. The horses should be
examined once or twice daily for
injuries or problems that have arisen.
Stalls will still be required for the
stallions, diseased or injured horses
and foaling mares.
The OMAFRA Web Site is
current, full of information, easy to
access and may be reached at
