The Rural Voice, 2001-12, Page 47News industry because it could import all it needed from New Zealand, but then New Zealand had a drought and didn't have any products to export. "So we have to make sure we protect the agriculture industry. We built a food industry under the most difficult conditions in the world. Seventy-five per cent of our food is produced farther north than any other country." He once explained to former Soviet President Mickael Gorbachev "It's our responsibility to make sure if things go wrong that they (Canadian farmers) are looked after, because they're producing the most important thing in life: food. Because you can do nothing without food." • On globalization: "You know what I call it? Gobble-ization." In the next few years 80 per cent of the food in Canada will be controlled by four retail companies by comparison to 34 per cent in the U.S. It's unfair when different countries have different sets of rules, and governments have different powers. If the U.S. secretary of agriculture wants to introduce a new policy he doesn't have to deal with 50 states, but the Canadian minister has to consult 10 provinces. • On today's ag. bureaucrats: "You don't have people who know anything about agriculture. You've got a whizkid in Ottawa who came from the Privy Council." When he was minister, he said, he was surrounded by good people who were trained in agriculture and they made him look good by designing programs that helped farmers but didn't cost the government much or build up the bureaucracy. • On subsidies" "What is a subsidy. Is education not a subsidy? Is research not a subsidy? Is transportation not a subsidy? Over half the grain in the U.S. is moved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Mississippi and its tributaries and the Columbia River. And they talk about us subsidizing our farmers. "We're the only member of the G7 that doesn't look after its farmers like the rest of them. "And yet our farm leaders go along with that damned nonsense.
