But catching the chow eluded her — every time she went near the dog it would bolt. Eventually the dog was on the move and Peeler tried to track it over snow -less frozen ground. After two to three weeks of fruitless efforts, she began to think that maybe its owner had a change of heart and had returned for the dog. But two months later Peeler found the dog just four miles from where he'd been dumped. "He was at the bottom of the food chain for some other dogs. They had ripped him apart in a field. That bothered me for a very long time," she said. It, in fact, bothered her so much she almost quit rescuing animals — almost. But today Peeler is happily living Horrible death of one abandoned dog almost made her quit rescuing animals on her hobby farm and enjoys watching the day-to-day antics of her nearly 30 animals of which many are rescues. Included in her menagerie is a horse named Toska, a rescued 37 - year -old donkey called Grama and a husky -cross dog who had been thrown from a car onto a highway. She also has five barn cats, a rooster who acquired the name Robin Rooster by once courting a reluctant robin and a barn skunk who she calls "her skunk in residence" and who she is only friendly terms with. In other words he's never sprayed her. "I find satisfaction in saving an animal's life that would have died or lived in pain or a miserable existence," she said. "Animals have feelings. They have the right to a comfortable life." Peeler urges people not to give animals as Christmas presents and please, she says, spay and neuter your pets. "Animals are like children and need a lot of care.
