Grey County hosts IPM 2004
Following a bid, spearheaded by
the County of Grey, at the Ontario
Plowmen's Association (OPA)
Annual meeting in February of 2001
Grey County was selected as the host
for the International Plowing Match
.and Farm Machinery Show (IPM) to
be held in September 2004.
The host farm for the tented city is
owned by the Davison family and is
located just west of Meaford on Grey
County Road 12. This site is the same
location that was used for the last
International Plowing Match held in
Grey County in 198'7. The
International Plowing Match is a
large trade show, held annually in a
different county or region in Ontario
that attracts more than 160
competitors and approximately 600 -
700 exhibitors. The Match has been
sponsored by the OPA in co-
operation with 51 county plowmen's
associations in Ontario since 1913.
While the IPM has a substantial
history it has faced competition from
both a fixed location farm show in
the same season and an indoor show
in the winter. However the IPM has
continued its strong presence because
it is a combination of a plowing
competition, sales and
demonstrations of farm machinery
and the entertainment of a "country
fair". All of these bring business
opportunities to the host region. It is a
pleasant blend of commercial
exhibits, entertainment and
educational venues. Recently both

Huron and Wellington Counties have
hosted very successful matches and
Middlesex County will be hosting
IPM 2002.
The Grey County Committee is
just now beginning the journey of
organizing to host an event that is
three years away. We now have Co -
Chairs Brian and Pearl Bumstead of
Holland Centre and three Vice -
Chairs, Neil McCutcheon of Owen
Sound, Fay Harrison of Durham and
Wayne McCausland of Meaford. This
core group along with numerous
volunteers hosted a display in the Tri -
County Tent at the IPM in Navan
near Ottawa this fall. This tent is a
venue for the next three host counties
to showcase their county at the
matches prior to them hosting the
event. This year our display was
popular as 100 bushels of Georgian
Bay apples were distributed to
visitors. This gave us an opportunity
to distribute postcards and maps
advertising Grey County and
encourage people to attend IPM 2004
in Meaford.
Our committee has determined
that approximately 40 committees
will be established to organize the
delivery of the show. We are
confident that volunteers will band
together to showcase their
community ... creating long lasting
friendships!O
