yields in western Ontario ranging
from three to 33 bu/acre with an
average of about 15 to 17 bu/acre.
Soybean yields in eastern Ontario
appear to be better but still belovv.
average. It appears that aphids may
have done as much damage as the
drought and heat.
Soybean basis levels are extremely
strong considering the fact that
harvest has begun. This year's
soybean crop may be the worst in
recent memory and given the high
usage, basis levels could stay at
unprecedented levels. With the crop
in Michigan suffering, soybeans will
need to be imported from farther
afield.
Ontario producers are caught
between a rock and a hard place.
Yields in most parts of Ontario will
be disappointing while basis levels
are very strong. Cash prices for corn
should stay relatively firm even
though future prices are weak.
Compared to corn, soybean prices
may be a little disappointing with less .
opportunity for price improvement.
Producers across Canada need to
push the federal government for
assistance now more than ever. Crops
right across the country have been
ravaged by drought and coupled with
the assistance that the American and
European farmers receive from their
governments, Canadian growers are
taking a double whammy. No
marketing system can be expected to
pay producers for their work all of
the time with government assistance.
The year 2001 is one of those times.
Small crops have ramifications
throughout the whole system -- from
crop input suppliers to elevators to
processors to truckers. Having said
this, producers still must do the best
job of marketing possible even
though individual situations may be
more critical than others. Everyone
still needs to strive for the maximum
returns and continue to look ahead
planning for the next crop year.0
