The Rural Voice, 2001-10, Page 39later, the lake was drained and area
farmers began growing vegetables in
the muck that remained.
Bill noted that there have been a
number of changes in the past
10 years. Ten years ago, there
were twice as many farmers in the
marsh as there are now.
"The way the industry tends to be
growing is the big guy gets bigger
and the small guy gets out, but we
tend to stick with growing
vegetables," Bill remarked.
Vegetables are hard work but modern
machinery has helped a lot. Bill
recalled they were picking lettuce by
hand starting at five in the morning
when his family first emigrated.
Right now at harvest time selling
the vegetable is seen as the big
problem as the market is volatile and
the prices for the farmer are
controlled by the same large
wholesale companies he buys his
seed from. Another problem could be
the margin they are allowed.
This fall, the potatoes and onions
that go on the truck are strictly for the
Ontario market and will end up on
dinner tables in cities hours away.
Very often their produce isn't sold in
the communities or resorts nearby.0
