Employees were consulted on how the system should. be set up. The bonuses are set to kick in on production that exceeds the average with all employees in a unit sharing in the value of the extra pigs that are being produced by the unit. This helps build a team spirit, Frank said. The company also has a system of "perks" designed to make all employees feel they're an important part of the bigger team, he says. There's a company clothing allowance that pays for clothing that bears the company logo. There's also a company vehicle program under which the company uses its volume buying power to purchase red pick up trucks, put a company logo on them and lease them back to their employees. The company also buys insurance at the fleet rate. Employees with poor driving records have to pay extra above the flat rate. , Each employee of the company also gets the equivalent value in pork pr9ducts of two animals per year. The hog is shipped and its value is given to the employees in vouchers that can be exchanged for pork products at a local retailer. The company also offers reduced rate housing, mainly for senior herd managers. This year it is erecting five new Royal homes on various farms for this purpose. Acre T also has two staff parties a year, one at Christmas and a summer barbecue, for which the company picks up all expenses. There's also a quarterly staff newsletter containing information on staff appointments, engagements, weddings and births, as well as production comparison figures among the four units. Frank said remuneration, vacation time and work hours are the most important in attracting people. Incentives, perks and housing are valuable in retaining employees. These have the added value of helping get new staff. "If people are happy they'll help you recruit new workers," he said, noting they'll project a good impression of your farm to friends and neighbours.
