The Rural Voice, 2001-09, Page 45, running it is pretty hard to get them to stop. If one cows whose number was not called half -way crosses the arena, the team will not get a time. George Holm of Elmwood -area lends cattle to competitions both locally and the Western Fair. For the Western Fair, Holm and another man are supplying 150 head of cattle. Fifteen cattle go into the ring at a time and one group of cattle is used for every five teams. The sport has difficulty finding farmers that will lend cows for competitions. It is for this reason that Holm's cattle go to 10 different competitions over a summer. Holm is paid for lending his cattle to the fair and all the transportation fees are paid for. Holm believes farmers think the cattle will lose too much weight after a day of running. According to Holm the cattle have been weighed before and after a competition and they haven't lost much weight. Holm has eight years of team penning experience under his belt. Working with horses and cattle is something he loves. He owns a horse stable and has spent many days rounding up cattle in the pasture. Every year in the spring. Holm takes a trip down to cowboy country, U.S.A. in Colorado and rides with a cattle drive for about a week. Holm also keeps cattle at the community pasture in Bruce, where he 'puts 20 cattle for the summer. The community pasture stretches over 1,000 acres and at the end of the summer he rides to find his cattle and rounds them up. The only equipment for team penning is a horse that is quick on its feet. The horse has to be able to cut from side to side, dip and dodge all on a fast pace. For a year Gowing penned with a family horse but in order to be at the top of competition she needed a better horse.
