Fairburn has been helping to
rehabilitate Sally's Creek, which runs
along the back of the permanent site
of Canada's Outdoor Farm Show (at
the Woodstock Research Station).
The project began in 1987. At that
time, Sally's Creek was badly eroded
and the fish populations had
dwindled. Over the years, Zone J
members and various Scout and
youth groups, have stabilized the
creek bankand the trout have now
made a come back.
Along with restoring the creek,
a self -guided tour of the area
has been created. Signs are
posted along the tour detailing the
different materials and methods used
for the restoration. Visitors can read
about what has been done while
they're looking at it.
"Farmers can see first-hand what
they can do to bring their creeks back
to life, " says Fairbairn. "Anyone can
do it, just by using natural materials,
and a bit of perseverance."
Fairbairn has also worked with
various youth groups, such as the
Ontario Stewardship Rangers, who
worked at the Creek in July
maintaining interpretive signs,
pruning and doing other maintenance
jobs.
"Working on projects such as
Sally's Creek is educational and it
gives young people a chance to get
some hands-on experience," says
Kate Maclntyre, team leader for the
Ontario SteWardship Rangers. "It
also kielps them appreciate the
environmental initiatives that are
happening in their communities."
The Grand River Foundation, in
conjunction with the Grand River
Conservation Authority (GRCA),
will be on-site promoting native tree
reforestation to commercial farmers.

watershed. One of its most current
efforts is in support of the Burford
Tree Nursery, run by the GRCA. The
nursery's goal is to restore native tree
species throughout southern Ontario.
Of special note is the Nursery's
work in propagating blight resistant
strains of the threatened American
Sweet Chestnut. In the early 1900s,
the deadly chestnut blight eradicated
