Another subject that is getting a lot of ink in farm publications is the return of natural fibre crops to farms and industry. Hemp, flax and other ag fibres are lighter, stronger, biodegradable, renewable and may soon prove to be cheaper than many synthetic fibres. The steadily widening gap between oil supply and oil consumption in North America is driving researchers to look carefully at replacements for petro -chemical products. As new applications are found for ag fibres in industry, new crop opportunities appear for farmers. This year's Ag Fibre Expo will feature a number of companies from North America and Europe which are busy developing new products made from hemp, flax, switchgrass, reed canary grass and other ag fibres. "Demand for these products is growing steadily," says Doug Albin, co-ordinator for the Ag Fibre Expo. The list of companies includes Sanelink Corp., a European manufacturer of hemp and flax fibre for ropes, twine, car parts and low - dust livestock bedding; Kenex, a company that grows and processes hemp fibre in Kent County; Hempline from Delaware, Ont.; and the Spirit Stream Trading Co. of Hamilton, which produces a line of cosmetics and hemp jeans.
