The Rural Voice, 2001-06, Page 37different from the rest because it is
told from a woman's point Of view.
M i I ler, the first female author of any
Donnelly book, has sent copies
across the oceans to places like
Ireland. She says while writing the
book there were times when it felt
like Johannah Donnelly's spirit was
watching and guiding her.
Robert Salts said he and many
other people have experienced
ghosts and spirits at the
Donnelly homestead. But he also
confesses he likes to get a rise out of
children with the ghosts. When he
does a tour Salts'tells groups to ring
the bell and, "summon the
Donnellys". Most children are
usually too scared to, he laughed.
The official Donnelly web site,
www.Donnellys.com said when
Robert Salts moved to the homestead
he could feel something watching
him in the barn.
"Oddly enough, since that first
encounter with the unknown spirits
that reside in the barn, built in 1877,
visitors taking the tour have
expressed the feeling the same
sensation," reads the web site by
M.L. Simpson.
Salts was backed up in his claim
that the place was haunted .by a TV
special on the A&E network. They
brought their own clairvoyantnt with
the filming crew and she too said she
felt a ghostly presence.
Miller said she has experienced the
ghosts first hand. When her family
went to the homestead she felt very
welcomed, something she doesn't
always feel, she said. Once her
family went into the barn Miller's
daughter left the building because she
couldn't take it. As well, the hair on
her husband's arms was standing on
end, she said.
"There's definitely something
there," Miller said in her home in
Stratford.
And although this story has been
told so many times, in so many
different ways it may never go away.
For many it is just a story that comes
to mind when they pass through
Lucan. For others it is more
compelling, a story that draws people
in and consumes their curiosity.
It is a story that will not die, that
will carry on into the future. For that
is the curse of the Donnellys. 0
