"We start networking, we start the ball rolling," Angel said. Since cattle are worth money the criminals usually try to sell them after they steal them, Hedley said. The Cattlemen's Association will send a fax to all the sales barns warning about the missing cattle that may be stolen. The sales barns will then keep an eye out for cattle that tit the description. "These cattle represent value, they're an asset," Hedley said. The RACT police officers also assist regular uniform officers who need help in solving or investigating a crime. If an officer needs extra help with questioning the public or surveillanceRACT will be called. Aside from animal theft, RACT has been investigating a number of recent thefts at farm equipment dealerships, Angel said. Brian McGavin of the farm machinery dealership McGavin's in Walton has experienced theft at his business several times. Three years ago there was a major theft when tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment was stolen. The thieves hit on a holiday Monday night and took a number of tools from the shop. A couple nights later, when the new tools had just arrived, the thieves returned, stealing the brand new tools. At this time there was no alarms on their shop, only locks. "I was always brought up to trust everybody," McGavin said. Since then McGavin's has added a sensor security system, but there have still been a couple theft attempts. People have cut holes in the roof and tried to get in, McGavin said. When the alarms go off, he also is notified at home and he investigates. "It's quite a feeling in the middle of the night, wondering if you're going to meet someone," McGavin said. Now McGavin's is planning to fence off the yard where equipment is stored. After hours people would come by and look at the equipment, and call the next day saying they were interested, McGavin said. Since things have been stolen from the yard before, they are fencing it for security reasons and to. please
