AYTON ONT.NOG 1C0 519-665-7711 Gardening a Targe deutzia last spring. I put the cuttings in a sand, peat moss and soil mixture and sank the pots under a tree right off the patio . The pots were covered with a light drycleaning bag supported by small stakes surrounding the three pots. The corners were weighted with a couple of bricks. All summer long I kept an eye on the plastic. Even with the light shade of the trees the little makeshift greenhouse would steam up and I would carefully lift one corner to allow some much-needed circulation. Several times during the summer I had to lift the cover to allow some rain in and then there were the times I forgot and had to water the pots. On first inspection this spring it would appear that I have a 60 per cent success rate. Since the labels fell off the pots early last summer I will have to wait for a few leaves to appear to confirm what shrub I have actually propagated. The unsuccessful cuttings were the ones that suffered from excessive wilting the first day. This spring, while I was clipping off broken shrubs that were planted the previous fall, I made some cuttings and now have a few mini coldframes filled and ready to monitor this summer. The new addition to my gardening basket is a permanent black marker.° Rhea Harnilton-Seeger and her husband raise two children at their home near Auburn. She is a skilled cook and gardener.
