Time to stop torturing Super Wrench
Most of the columns I ha, e
written have been centered around a
character that readers have come to
identify with in at least a Live county
radius. Super Wrench has become the
quintessential farming husband
There are
nen who have
sent him
commiserating
notes when he's
been especially
chauvinistic and
men who told
him his only
salvation was to
get rid of me.
He's been an
excellent source
of hilarious
material and a
good sport for
not breaking my yping fingers.
The time has come to stop
torturing the man.
When I began writing this column
20 years ago, he was struggling with
a wife who was often more hindrance
than help, four young children and
enough debt to keep him from seeing
daylight for two lifetimes. We had a
few downers, but all in all, God was
good, and we appreciated his
forbearance.
Now, Super Wrench is still on the
farm, no longer farming, but working
with farmers and machinery. There
are days that I feel like strapping on a
coupe of David Brown fenders so he
will notice me. His clone, our son
Douglas, operates Teeswater Agro
Parts with Super Wrench and they
make a formidable team. They've
added our son-in-law, Carl to the
equation and all they're missing is a
mean junkyard dog. Doug and Carl
claim that's a position I should fulfill
since I know squat about machinery.
The years stealthily creeping upon
us have left their mark. There is more
of some things and a lot less of
others. There is nothing funny about
a woman past her prime trying to
hoist herself into a pickup truck that
has no running board and the door
handle missing. Ditto for a man
whose once -broken fingers are now
arthritic and he's trying to lace his
boots on a frosty morn.
Readers who agreed or disagreed
with a column, gave me insight and
direction. The two columns that got
the most reaction were "Grandma
Ina's Sewing Room" and "Hog
Farmers in Distress".
Although this particular column
has run its course, I am leaving the
window open for a future series on an
aging Wrench. How does Rusty Tool
strike you? I'm sure the editor, Keith
would appreciate your comments of
what you'd like to read in The Rural
Voice in the future and I would like to
thank all of you for your laughter and
tears in the past. Remember, a
chuckle a day keeps depression at
