The flower commands that kind of attention, says Margy. "They are spectacular. They have a presence. They make a statement." Growing the garden bulb to be marketable takes about three years, Arnold says. "People may think bulbs cost a lot, but it's been three years to get it there." Some of the new varieties can take seven to 10 years. "To be a proven hybrid, reproducing over and over again, could take that long," he says. Once the bulbs are in the ground, however, people get what they pay for. Lilies are easy to grow and easy to care for, the Wiegersmas say. "And they multiply so you get a nice bunch after a few years," says Margy. The Asiatic and L.A. hybrids bloom for about a month in late June or early to mid-July. "However, the more buds the longer they will bloom," says Margy, adding that it could be up to eight weeks. Orientals bloom in August. All of this relies on a number of variables, the Wiegersmas note, such as sun, moisture and the time of planting. As the Orientals are not as cold hardy as other hybrids, they require mulch over the winter. All lilies like sunshine. "But if you find that a spot is shadier than when you originally planted them and they are not blooming, just transplant them to a better location in the fall." "People may think bulbs cost a lot, but ifs been three years to get it there." wow SPRING HAS SPRUNG IN THE GREENHOUSE They are filling up fast with the area's largest selection of annuals. geraniums, hanging baskets, etc. Lots of new colours & varieties including proven winners and the "Waves"! However, Margy says, if planted in the spring, while there would be less bud, and it would bloom later, it would self -correct the next year. With the fundraiser which ends in time for people to get those bulbs in the ground in April the Wiegersmas hope for a busy year. Arnold jokes, "We want to run out of bulbs." The couple's long-term goal is, according to Arnold, "to see 10 acres of lilies in bloom. In Holland you would have that."0 32 Bruce Street STAR CH CE Thornbury, Ont. osbornetv@aol.com IT'S YOUR TELEVISION 1 \wwwwwwwwww\wwwwwwwwmow/ `o4rtn9 is in the P ' .if..MYu•_ FERTILIZERS • Terra-Gator® with air spreader and impregnator • Micro nutrients • Bulk delivery unit • Spreaders readily available CHEMICALS Protect all your crops against insects & weeds • 2 Sprayers available for P.P.I., pre or post spraying • Wick Weeding • Drop Nozzling We will customize a fertilizer and chemical program specific to your requirements. • GPS Field Mapping • Nutrient Management Plans Available • Soil Testing SEEDS • Corn • Soybeans • White beans • Grass seed • Canola • Barley & Oats • Wheat ALPINE DEALER FOR SPEARE seeds HOWSON & HOWSON LTD.
