possibly using whittled pieces of
wood to direct the sap into collecting
"buckets" fashioned from bark. So
how'd they boil it? Early accounts
indicate that Native Americans used
Targe wooden boiling troughs made
from hollowed out logs. Since you
can't put a wooden trough over a fire
and hot rocks, they simply kept
adding hot rocks into the trough until
the water boiled away. So it is,
ingenuity goes hand-in-hand with
making syrup.°
