24 THE RURAL VOICE
engine. It was owned by the doctor
and undertaker in Markdale and
would come out into the country on
the sleigh trails to pick up expecting
mothers, people who had died ... and
hockey players who weren't able to
get into town for the games.
The Falls' fondest memories are
of the days when the
neighbours worked .together
and shared equipment for threshing,
buzzing wood and doing many other
jobs around the farm. June says she
could tell when the men came in for
their meals that they really enjoyed
working together. Harmless pranks
were not uncommon when the men
got together and Jack recalls one
occasion when they decided to eat the
cook out of all of her pies. They
eased off on the main course, and
each man ate almost a whole pie. Just
when they thought they were finished
the woman of the house came out
with two more pies on each arm.
They also remember the "house
parties" every week during the
winters when people would open
their homes and neighbours would
gather to dance while someone
played the fiddle, visit or play cards.
House parties every week
brought people together
Today Jack and June Falls enjoy
the comforts of their brick bungalow
on a corner of the farm that June's
grandparents once owned. They
lament the fact that it is so difficult
for young people to start into
farming, and realize there is little
incentive to do so. They are hopeful,
however, that a couple of their
grandchildren may taken an interest
in farming as a career and way of life.
Mayor Don McCausland and
Ontario Federation of Agriculture
Director Bob Brassington presented
Jack and June Falls with the
Agricultural Heritage Award in front
of a group of family members and
neighbours. In accepting the
engraved plaque Jack commented,
"The community has been good to us.
If it wasn't for the neighbours we
wouldn't have made it farming. I
realize how important neighbours are
in a community like this, and I'm
proud to be a citizen of Euphrasia
Township".0
