Factory farms should
treat liquid manure
I have read numerous articles of
factory farms with little interest until
I read of The Big Sky in "It's More
Than Pigs" by Keith Roulston in The
Rural Voice January 2001 issue. This
guy (Florian Possberg) has told it like
it is, an,d now it's my turn to add my
two cents' worth, as this has really
upset me, I have a lot to say and a
small space to say it, so I hope I am
understood.
The very thought of such huge
factory farms whether they be swine,
poultry or cattle reminds me of the
uncontrolled industrial revolution of
the 1800s. To me this is deja vu all
over again. Nowadays we do have
government control of an inadequate,
antiquated version, so this is the way
I see this whole sordid scenario: "We
will adhere to the letter of the law".
But this is clearly a problem of an
industrial startup underfunding with a
devil-may-care attitude.
Since we are crossing provincial
and international borders, the laws
governing these barns should be
federal. The technology of
reclamation is perfected. It is here in
Canada. It works successfully and
profitably. If a reclamation plan to
process the unwanted effluent were
installed it would solve the problem
of factory farm at source and all
creatures great and small would
universally benefit.0
