Be proud to come
from such hardy stock
It was with great interest that I
read the article by Greg Brown in the
December issue of The Rural Voice
on the felling of The Biggest Tree in
the Valley, the giant elm tree, 60
years ago.
It made me think of the early
pioneers who had to deal with such
trees when they arrived in their new
country. Just imagine to have been
allotted a plot of ground to build a
farm on and to arrive only to find it
covered with giant elm, maple, beech
or other hardwood trees. Imagine the
many who had never handled an axe
in their lives except possibly to cut
some kindling for the stove. Imagine
them standing there, watched by their
wives, not knowing where to begin
cutting. The wood was hard and had a
tendency to make the axe bounce off,
with the danger that the blade would
slice into their leg — not an unusual
happening. Some are reported to have
bled to death leaving their family,
especially if it happened in winter,
unprotected.
This article should make those
whose forefathers settled here, proud
to come from such hardy stock.0
