Public school teachers lead anti-drug initiatives “The Ontario Public School Teachers’ Federation (OPSTF) sup ports the drug education initiatives announced November 20,’’ said Bill Martin, the organization’s President. “I’m pleased to note that teach ers will not be expected to ‘Go it alone’ in the field of drug educa tion,” said Martin. “Mr. Black’s emphasis on involving whole com munities in the campaign recog nizes that schools and teachers cannot solve all society’s problems by themselves,” he added. “The key to the programme’s success in schools will be the development of effective in-service training pro grammes for teachers. Support for such programmes will have to be very evident from the constituent groups in every board of educa tion.” “Federation members believe in encouraging students to develop healthy attitudes toward life. Teaching children effective deci sion-making skills will help them to resist peer pressure and to make the intelligent choice not to use drugs,” Martin said. The OPSTF Annual Meeting voted overwhelming in favour of a motion to establish a Drug Educa tion Task Force, which will report in the Spring of 1990. The Assem bly also proposed that information on drug education be delivered directly to the membership through its own professional publication. “Teachers have supported the concept of a partnership between home, school and community to assist students’ academic and so cial progress. Drug education fits into this scenario and teachers accept a leadership role in this area,” Martin concluded. The Ontario Public School Teach ers’ Federation represents 23,000 elementary public school teachers and is an affiliate of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation. BRUSSELS 887-9726 Brussels People By Bonnie Gropp Phone 887-9114 or 523-4792 A small piece of history was returned to Brussels last week. George Cousins’ brother-in-law, Lou Metzger, who works for Ontario Hydro in Barrie, was at the site of an accident in Barrie replacing a broken hydro pole. While digging, he spied something shiny, so stopped to investigate. What he discovered was a milk bottle from Cousins Creamery, which George estimates to be about 40 years old. “It is scratched just slightly where the “U” is, but other than that it’s not broken or chipped,” George said. Also, when the framework from the door leading to the new addition was torn off the door at Brussels Public School a week ago Tuesday, some further memora bilia was unearthed. George, who is caretaker at the school, explained that when the workmen pulled the frame away, ‘Fat Lady’ pantomime entertains Friendship Club The December meeting of the Brussels Friendship Club took the form of a Christmas party when 33 members and guests enjoyed a bountiful beef dinner at 12:30 p.m. Margery Ritchie very aptly thanked the catering committee of the Canadian Legion. New president Gerald Exel read of Christ’s nativity from Luke, chapter 2, when love was brought down to earth that night so long ago by a child in a manger and lingers on and glows again in the hearts of all mankind. A short entertainment period followed with readings and carol singing. A pantomine entitled “Fat Henschel trial Continued from page 1 had sold calves at the annual 4H calf sale on Thanksgiving Day and a number of large western produ cers of stocker cattle who had made shipments to Brussels Stockyards that ended up being sold in other southern Ontario yards instead.
