Entertainment Stratford Festival shows $351,924 year-end surplus Review Kaleidoscope top entertainment BY ERIN ROULSTON [AGE 9] Out of all the children’s plays I have seen, I have never seen a play better than “Once Upon a Story” performed by Kaleidoscope Thea tre at Blyth Memorial Hall on Saturday. The show combined hand-clapp ing, toe-tapping music and inter esting, educational, yet hilarious stories that the group acted out nicely. The four actors and one musician acted out seven fairy tales that the adults liked as well as the children. The four actors, (Janet Baxter, Kelt Ecclestone, Sharon Heath, and Keith Provost) asked for suggestions from the children in the audience and included them in their stories. With musician/man- ager Paul Patterson providing the music, they also sang songs where they changed the words to make up their own songs. Sometimes they made nursery rhymes and sang them to the music they played. They acted out the story sugges tions from the audience so well (as if they already knew what they were going to do) that they had a lady who sat near me bending over and slapping their knee from laughing so hard. When the show was over I said to my friend “That show was so good I didn’t notice that it was an hour long.” But as they say time flies when you’re having fun! Once again, the Stratford Festi val’s fiscal year has ended with a surplus. The details of the financial statements, that will be presented at the Annual General Meeting on Saturday, December 2, indicate an operating surplus of $351,924 for 1989. The 1989 season, which ended on October 29, is the fifth consecutive year the Festival has finished in the black and it leaves the organization with an accumulated operating surplus of $638,867. The 1989 operating surplus is the result of another successful year at the Box Office. PARK THEATRE HELD OVER 2ND WEEK Christmas Vacation Tangled tales Kaleidoscope Story Theatre entertained children at Blyth Memorial Hall Saturday with music and the hilarious telling of fairy tales. Blyth Festival’s 6th annual writers’ retreat begins Eight writers will be included in the Blyth Festival’s sixth Annual Writers’ Winter Retreat which lasts a full three weeks. Writers in residence who are part of this special new play development program include: Bill Butt, David Carley, Robert Clinton (author of Mail Order Bride), Colleen Curran (author of Cake- Walk and Miss Balmoral of the Bayview), Laurie Fyffe (author of Bush Fire), Deborah Kimmett, Dan Needles (author of Perils of Perse phone), and Carol Sinclair. Mem bers of the public are invited to sit in the audience on Saturday, December 16 at the Blyth Festival’s “Garage” on Dinsley Street at 1 p.m. for a public reading of scenes from plays in progress. Those attending can enjoy some Christ mas cheer, special treats and entertaining scenes and meet the authors, actors and directors of Blyth’s 1989 play development programme. “The thrust of our new play development program is two-fold”, says Artistic Director Katherine Kaszas. “The Blyth Centre for the Arts provides playwrights with access to actors and directors; and provides them with a sanctuary - a haven in which to write. Frequently given the term workshop, these sessions take a number of forms: actors, directors and playwright at a table reading and analyzing a text; actors up on their feet - text in hand helping the director and Continued on page 27 SPECIAL COUNTRY DINNER PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA THURS., FRI., SAT. 5P.M.-12A.M.
