The Citizen, 1989-10-18, Page 25PAGE 26. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1989. Theatre review ‘Big Girls Cry’ plucky portrayal of beauty problems BY BONNIE GROPP “If only the world would look past my body and into my eyes!” This profound statement was utter ed by Heather Esdon during her performance as Faith Monaghan in “Big Girls Cry” Saturday evening at Blyth Memorial Hall. Faith is a somewhat overweight actress, who is busily and nervous ly preparing for an afternoon audition. For ninety minutes, she fluffs, fusses and frets her way through a ritualistic beauty regime, all the while regaling the audience with amusing anecdotes of her past, her appearance and her views on society and how it views people. The near-capacity audience at Blyth delighted in Faith’s witty repartee and amusing antics as she showered, applied makeup, curled Ethel 4H club meets Finishing touch Trying to live up to society’s expectations is not always an easy task as Heather Esdon proves in her portrayal of Faith Monaghan, star of “Big Girls Cry’’, which played at Blyth Memorial Hall on Saturday. They got right into the 4H spirit as they met thei’ leaders Karen Bowles and Helei Van Veen and a new membe Shannon Boyd. After the 4H Pledge was said ant members were introduced thej played a game and filled in tht healthy tips in their 4H book. Through characterizations, jokes and conversations with the audi ence she illustrates to what lengths people will go to try to meet society’s expectations and how miserable they can be when they can’t. While some of the humour was maybe a little corny, (the applica tion of a deodorant got laughs), Ms. Esdon who also wrote the play, presents us with a multi-faceted character who is sensitive, intelli gent, full of life and humour, yet can never be completely happy because she is overweight. Her message is poignant, and compell ing yet delivered in a light-hearted approach. Also with so much stress today on physical beauty, Ms. Esdon’s plucky portrayal, which at times shows her in less than flattering situations, is commend able. My major complaint with the production was that the set design hid a great deal of Ms. Esdon’s performance from me. “Big Girls Cry” is Ms. Esdon’s first script and it has played to sold-out houses receiving critical acclaim at the 1988 Edmonton Fringe Festival, at GCTC and the Canadian Popular Theatre Alliance Festival in 1989. She will be performing her one-woman show throughout the province until spring of next year, and if the opportunity to see it arrives I would recommend it. ' A Fri. - Thurs.
