Bulls score upset over Hanover, remain unbeaten I he Bulls who were guilty of taking foolish costly penalties should be thankful for the solid goaltending of Murray Foxton who kept them in the game until the third period. For on this day the Bulls skated into the Hanover Coliseum and ignoring the bright lights, loud music, a large boisterous crowd and most of all, standing up to the intimidation tactics of the Hanover Club smote the almighty Barons by playing “textbook” hockey. You had to be there! Ron Strome and Steve Vanden- dool worked the corners to set up an unattended Marty Rutledge in the slot for the game’s opening goal at 8:20. Hanover tied the game on the powerplay but the Bulls startled the Barons with two power play goals of their own: Rutledge from Strome and Craig King fol lowed by a JC Hewitt point shot from Strome. The Barons added a late goal to end the first period 3-2 in favour of Brussels. A fired-up Hanover squad completely dominated the second period outshooting the Bulls 20-9. However, backed by oustanding goaltending from Murray Foxton and a Rutledge shorthanded tally, Brussels finished 40 minutes of hockey leading 4-2. The Bulls continued to shine and working hard added to their lead when Kevin DeJong set up a Brett Martin blast to take a 5-2 lead with 10 minutes to play. Hanover notch ed a powerplay goal and then shocked the Bulls when, playing two men down, they scored a shorthanded goal with 1:57 remain ing. Sorry to say the Barons roughhouse tactics backfired as costly penalties allowed the Bulls to control play in the dying seconds for the 5-4 win. Murray Foxton faced 47 shots for the win while Marty Rutledge with the hat-trick was named the games first star. Sunday afternoon the Bulls host ed the Walkerton Blackhawks in their home opener dedicated to the memory of Mike Vincent, a five- year veteran of Brussels Junior Hockey, who died following a car accident during the summer. Walkerton opened the scoring early in the first and led until the 13:45 mark when Marty Rutledge scored unassisted. The game re mained tied until midway through the second when the Bulls scored Gibbings followed by Rutledge from Ron Strome and Steve Van- dendool. Walkerton scored 42 seconds into the third to close the gap to 3-2 but the Bulls replied quickly as Andrew Henderson scored from Wall and Dwaine Nicholls at 2:01 followed by Wall on a pass from Henderson at 2:52. Walkerton scored their final goal with 10 minutes to play before Brussels clicked four times to finish the game at 9-3 in the Bulls favour. Kurt Wall and Marty Rutledge completed their hat-tricks, sand wiching goals by Ron Strome and Ryan Gallaher.
