Sports The Brussels Bulls skated to their first win in Jr. C. action with an 8-4 decision over the Grand Valley Harvesters Sunday night ih Arthur. Bevin Flett scored unassisted on the powerplay 76 seconds into the game with Steve Fritz adding to the lead 23 seconds later on passes from Ryan Gallaher and Kevin De Jong. Grand Valley notched a powerplay goal halfway through the period before Ron Strome regained the two-goal lead with help from Flett and Andrew Weber. Grand Valley surprised the Bulls with a short-handed effort at 18:50 to end the first period scoring summary. The Bulls Kurt Wall was set up on the powerplay by Marty Rut ledge and Bob McMillan at 14:43 of the second period but again Grand Valley scored a late period goal to end 40 minutes of hockey with the score 4-3 in favour of Brussels. at 3:09, followed by Rutledge from Strome and Kevin Talsma at 4:44. Grand Valley scored their final goal of the game at 8:29 but a Strome powerplay goal from Craig King and Rutledge followed by a Ron Buchanan backhand from Fritz and Talsma sealed the victory. Murray Foxton faced 39 shots in taking the victory while Brussels fired 42 on the Grand Valley goal. Special credit is given to the Bulls penalty-killing unit who time after time rose to the occasion as referee Lee Rodgers assessed 160 ' minutes in penalties, 82 to the ’ Bulls including fighting majors to Flett and De Jong in the dying seconds of play. Offensively the Bulls have shown a solid nucleus of firepower with three solid lines capable of scoring. Unfortunately their inexperience at playing defensive hockey is allow ing the opposition equal opportun ity. 4 The Juniors have opened the season with three rookies on de fence, Jeff Coulter (Milverton), Jamie Gibbings (Clinton), and Craig King (Howick). Ron Buchan an and Kevin Talsma return from last season to join ex-Wingham Ironmen Bevin Flett (Teeswater) and J.C. Hewitt (Wingham) on the Bulls defence core. The undefeated Bulls face their biggest challenge to date Friday night as they travel to the Hanover Colliseum to face the Barons at 8:30 p.m. the Juniors home opener is Sunday afternoon at 2 against the Walkerton Blackhawks. _ —. - •’NO FeeS■4 H (]/ -ALL INVESTMENTS I X /fl GUARANTEED4 INSURED | / U •FUNDS TRANSFERABLE VIA CHARTER BANK 524-2773 Goderich 1 *800’265-5503 The Bulls struck early for two quick goals in the third, Dwaine Nicholls from Flett and J.
